Dr. Michael Dennehy was a charter counselor during the founding of Brookhaven College in 1978, joining as one of the youngest faculty members and professor of human development in the Dallas County Community College District. Over a distinguished 43-year career in higher education, he has contributed to five colleges across North Texas. In 2004, he returned to Brookhaven College, where he currently served as the Executive Director of Planning, Research, and Institutional Effectiveness. His career includes roles in counseling at Mountain View College, Richland College, Brookhaven College, and Northeast Texas Community College=, where he was director of counseling. At Brookhaven College, he has also held positions as Instructional Dean of the Social Science, Math Science, and World Languages Divisions. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was honored as Administrator of the Year in 2005 and was subsequently promoted to Executive Dean of the Social Science, World Languages, and Distance Learning Divisions in 2006.
Before returning to Brookhaven, Dr. Dennehy served as the Dean of Distance Learning at the R. Jan LeCroy Center for Educational Telecommunications, overseeing online instructional and student services for Dallas TeleCollege (now Dallas Colleges Online).
A Dallas native, Dr. Dennehy graduated from Bishop Lynch High School and attended Eastfield College. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Guidance Studies from The University of North Texas, a Master of Arts in Counseling from Southern Methodist University, and a Doctor of Education in Supervision, Curriculum, and Instruction—Higher Education from Texas A&M University-Commerce, where he also completed a comprehensive teaching minor in Psychology. Since 1984, he has been an instructor of Psychology and has also served as an adjunct instructor in Educational Leadership, teaching courses in Issues in Higher Education, Research Methodologies, and the American Community College.
Dr. Dennehy’s extensive career spans all facets of community college education, including instruction, computer information services, extension services, administration, counseling, assessment, and student services. As a charter administrator at Northeast Texas Community College, he directed counseling for 15 years and led institutional research until his return to the Dallas district in 2000. He served for 11 years and directed the office of planning, research, and institutional effectiveness; and was the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges Brookhaven College Liaison during his final year of full-time employment. When he directed the college’s final comprehensive self-study in 2018, Brookhaven College’s acheived reaffirmation of accreditation with no recommendations.
Since 1983, Dr. Dennehy has been a Licensed Professional Counselor (#02373) with the Texas Behavioral Health Council reflecting his long-term commitment to professional excellence in counseling.
